Rope access inspection of newly installed pier buffers and concrete structure of Penarth pier

Structural Surveys

The importance of a critical asset such as an industrial chimney is usually only fully recognised if failure of that asset leads to a disruption in production, loss of steam, hot water, power or suddenly represents a significant safety risk.

Churchill undertake both destructive and non destructive structural surveys to industrial chimneys and other critical assets that are, by their design, difficult to access. These surveys are carried out in strict accordance with the HSE Guidance Note GS53 and the A.T.L.A.S Inspection guide for Single Flue Industrial Steel Chimneys and Multi Flue steel chimneys to BS4076 Appendix A.

Content of a survey for an industrial steel chimney could include:

  • Drone (UAV)
  • Non Destructive Ultra Sonic Testing
  • Removal of insulation & cladding
  • Chimney design check for conformity to BS4076
  • Anti Mass Vibration Dampers, Condition & Frequency
  • Lateral Support Arrangements inc Guy Wires
  • Holding Down Arrangement
  • Destructive & Non Destructive Testing of Flange Bolts
  • Examination and testing of the installed lightning protection system
  • Internal remote colour CCTV surveys to confirm the condition of linings
  • Security and condition of fixed access and platforms
  • Testing & Inspection of installed fall arrest systems
  • Aircraft warning lights

Whilst it is rare that new concrete or brick chimneys are built in the UK, these type of structures remain in operation and have done so for a number of years and therefore demand regular inspection & maintenance to ensure they remain in a good structural & serviceable condition.

Content of a survey for a concrete & brick chimney could include:

  • Drone (UAV)
  • Concrete condition survey
  • Internal remote colour CCTV surveys to confirm the condition of linings
  • Security and condition of fixed access and platforms
  • Inspection of fixtures and fittings including step irons, steel tensioning bands, aircraft warning lights and sampling platforms
  • Examination and testing of an installed lightning protection system
  • Testing & inspection of installed fall arrest systems
  • Cavity boroscope inspection
  • Thermal imaging surveys
  • Construction design checks
