CSC Ltd have successfully completed the refurbishment of the 80 metre tall SMITIE tower at BAE Barrow in Furness.

The contract included replacing over 5000 individual bolts, structural repairs and strengthening to the steel tower frame, preparation and painting of the tower frame and the removal and replacement of 3no 80.0m tall x 3.0m diameter insulated and clad steel flues located within the confines of the tower frame.

The contract was completed over a 21 month period and at its peak was staffed by a team of twelve operatives, with skills ranging from coded welders, IRATA rope access teams, scaffolders and NVQ steeplejacks rigging and working from motorised suspended platforms and bosun seats.
